Coinbase RLUSD listing: what went live on Wednesday
Ripple and Coinbase announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, that Coinbase now supports Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin. Support covers the Coinbase retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime, so both retail and institutional customers can use it. The Block reported the details, citing the joint release.
Customers can convert U.S. dollars and other supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD at a 1:1 ratio. Deposits and withdrawals work on the XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Coinbase's own Base network. For a trader, the practical point is that moving between dollars, existing stablecoins and RLUSD on Coinbase should involve no pricing spread built into the conversion itself, although network fees and any trading fees still apply.
One piece is missing. Support for Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including the use of RLUSD as collateral, is described as expected to follow. Serrari Group also noted that access and collateral use were planned but not available at launch. Anyone hoping to post RLUSD as margin on that platform should wait for a confirmed date.
Why the timing matters
The listing arrived in the same week as several other developments for Ripple. On Monday, October 26, Ripple received final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to launch a national trust bank, which would bring RLUSD under federal oversight. On Wednesday, Moody's assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term and a P-1 short-term deposit rating, citing credit quality and the market value of the reserve assets. That rating detail comes from The Block's summary of the Moody's report.
The Block also reports that Ripple widened its partnership with BNY to provide custody support for XRP and RLUSD, and expanded its work with Robinhood to bring RLUSD to that company's retail and institutional businesses. Taken together, the pieces describe a stablecoin building out regulation, custody, a credit view and distribution at nearly the same time.
Brett Tejpaul, Co-CEO of Coinbase Institutional, said in the release that adding RLUSD is another step toward the "everything exchange." That is a statement of Coinbase's strategy. In our view, a stablecoin that is available on the largest US venue, backed by a trust-bank approval and a rating, is easier for compliance teams at funds and corporates to approve than one with only offshore liquidity. That is our reading and not something the companies have claimed.
Market cap figures differ by outlet
RLUSD launched in December 2024, according to The Block citing Ripple. Reports of its current size are not identical. The Block and Bitcoin.com put market capitalization at about $2.6 billion, and Serrari Group gave roughly the same figure for October 29. Digital Today, citing Ripple, said about $2.58 billion. Blockchainreporter, also citing Ripple's announcement, said more than $2.4 billion was in circulation.
These numbers are close enough that none changes the picture, and the gaps likely reflect different measurement dates or definitions. Traders who size positions or liquidity expectations around supply should check the issuer's own figures and an on-chain source on the day they trade.
Liquidity and competition: what is not yet confirmed
CoinTurk reports that Ripple itself will provide RLUSD liquidity on Base, and that Kraken had been the main US exchange offering regulated RLUSD/USD trading until now. Both claims come from a single outlet and we have not seen them confirmed in the announcement coverage, so treat them cautiously. If they hold, the listing would add a second major US venue for the pair, which could narrow spreads over time. The effect on volumes is not yet visible in any data we can cite.
U.Today also noted that the Coinbase listing coincided with the OCC's approval for Ripple National Trust Bank, and it repeated the 1:1 conversion across the XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Base.
What it means for XRP and the wider market
Ripple's stablecoin and its XRP token are separate assets, and a stablecoin listing does not directly create demand for XRP. XPERTRAX data shows XRP at $1.29, down 2.98% over 24 hours, while Bitcoin sits at $79,809 (-1.43%) and Ethereum at $2,308 (-2.02%). The whole group is lower, so the move in XRP looks like broad market weakness more than a reaction to this news. For context on how Ripple has positioned XRP within banking, see our earlier analysis of Ripple's banking strategy, and for the regulatory angle on charters, our piece on the stablecoin charter approach.
Where RLUSD matters more is as a trading and settlement tool. With Base in the mix, users can move it on a low-cost network that Coinbase operates, and the XRP Ledger route keeps it close to Ripple's own ecosystem.
What traders should watch
- The date and terms for Coinbase Global Exchange access and collateral use.
- Whether RLUSD supply keeps growing after the listing, measured against the roughly $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion range now reported.
- How Ripple's trust bank operates once it launches under federal oversight, and what that means for reserve disclosures.
- Whether Robinhood and BNY integrations go live and bring new flows.
Stablecoin exposure carries its own risks, including reserve quality, redemption access and platform concentration. A rating and a federal charter reduce some of those concerns without removing them, and position sizing still deserves care; our guide to crypto risk management covers the basics.
The listing is a distribution milestone rather than a price catalyst. Its value will show in supply, liquidity depth and institutional use over the coming months, and none of those can be judged from one day of announcements.
