Fear and Greed Index History
For comparison, alternative.me's Fear and Greed Index reads 51 (Neutral) today. It uses different inputs, such as social media and search trends, so the two indexes do not always agree. Reference data from alternative.me.
How the Index Is Calculated
Each signal is scored from 0 to 100, where 50 is neutral, and the scores are combined by weight. If a data source is unavailable, its weight is shared among the others rather than guessed.
| Signal | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Price momentum | 30% | Bitcoin's price against its 30-day average. Above it leans greed, below it leans fear. |
| News sentiment | 25% | Bullish minus bearish share of the crypto news published in the past 48 hours. |
| Trading volume | 20% | Bitcoin's 7-day volume against its 30-day average, in the direction of the week's price move. |
| Futures funding | 15% | The Bitcoin perpetual futures funding rate. Higher funding means traders are paying up to stay long. |
| Volatility | 10% | Bitcoin's 30-day volatility against its 90-day level. Unusually high volatility leans fear. |
Scores of 0-24 are Extreme Fear, 25-44 Fear, 45-55 Neutral, 56-75 Greed and 76-100 Extreme Greed. Price, volume and funding data come from Binance.
How Traders Use the Fear and Greed Index
Sentiment tends to swing further than prices justify. Extreme fear has often shown up near local lows and extreme greed near local highs, which is why many traders read the index against the crowd. It works best as context: check the Bitcoin price prediction and analyst targets, compare it with today's free crypto signals, and read the crypto news today behind the news score.
Long stretches of fear or greed usually line up with the phases described in our guide to crypto market cycles. When sentiment is extreme, position size matters more than usual, so revisit crypto risk management before you act, or test an idea on a virtual balance in TradePilot AI. For every coin we track, see live crypto prices.
Fear and Greed Index FAQ
QWhat is the crypto fear and greed index?▾
It is a single score from 0 to 100 that summarises crypto market sentiment. Low numbers mean fear, when traders sell and avoid risk; high numbers mean greed, when they chase gains. The XPERTRAX index combines Bitcoin price momentum, news sentiment, trading volume, futures funding and volatility.
QWhat does today's reading mean?▾
Today's reading is 44, which is Fear. The components below show which signals pulled the score up or down.
QHow is it different from alternative.me's index?▾
alternative.me's index is the best-known crypto fear and greed index and uses its own inputs, including social media and search trends. The XPERTRAX index uses market data from Binance and the sentiment of the news we publish, and shows every component, so the two can differ on a given day. Both are shown on the chart for comparison.
QHow often is the index updated?▾
Every hour. Each day keeps one reading, and the last reading of a day becomes its value in the history chart.
QIs extreme fear a signal to buy?▾
Not on its own. Extreme fear has often appeared near market lows and extreme greed near highs, but sentiment can stay extreme for weeks. Treat the index as background, and use price levels, a stop loss and position sizing for actual trades. Nothing on this page is investment advice.
The Fear and Greed Index describes market sentiment. It is not a forecast and not investment advice.
